Storytelling has the power to shape perceptions, build empathy, and drive action.
At Wips, we are committed to dignified storytelling — an approach that prioritises ethical narratives, respects the individuals involved, and fosters positive change within the community. Our Art of Dignified Storytelling campaign allowed us to showcase stories that exemplify this philosophy, demonstrating how responsible journalism can have a tangible impact.
As a hyperlocal newsroom, we recognise the responsibility that comes with sharing stories. We strive to avoid sensationalism, ensure accuracy, and uphold the dignity of those featured. By doing so, we build trust with our audience and contribute to a sense of belonging within the community.
Our storytelling approach focuses on resilience, hope, and shared values, proving that even small actions can create a ripple effect of positive transformation.
Stories with impact
Our campaign included several impactful stories that resonated deeply with our audience. Each of these stories sparked conversations, mobilised support, and reinforced the power of community-driven change:
Charitable coffee: A local coffee cart initiative allowing customers to “pay it forward” received over 1 million views. The increased visibility led to an unexpected outcome — a family received the financial support needed to send their child back to school. This story highlights how small gestures of kindness can lead to meaningful change.
Healing: A call for justice: A survivor’s story of abuse reached over 900,000 people, reigniting interest in a long-stalled legal case. The impact extended beyond digital engagement; a march for justice was organised in the survivor’s hometown, marking a significant step in their pursuit of accountability. This case demonstrates the power of dignified storytelling in giving a voice to those seeking justice.
The strength of connection: A heartfelt story about enduring love became one of our most celebrated pieces, garnering over 100,000 interactions. This story resonated deeply with our audience, reinforcing the idea that love and support can transcend loss and hardship.
Rising above: A simple yet powerful question — “Are you happy?” — unveiled a deeply moving personal story. The audience responded with nearly 4,600 supportive comments. One viewer was so touched that they organised a week-long trip for the interviewee and their family. This story exemplifies how storytelling can inspire acts of kindness and solidarity.
Building hope: When we shared the story about Armando, a man collecting aluminum to support his family, our audience responded with over 100,000 interactions and 200 messages offering help. Many people shared their personal encounters with him, emphasising how storytelling can bring communities together to create real change.
Dignified storytelling in journalism
Dignified storytelling is more than just a technique; it is a responsibility. At Wips, we are dedicated to ensuring that every story aligns with our core values of integrity, respect, and community empowerment. By prioritising dignity in our narratives, we aim to inform, engage, and inspire positive action.
The Art of Dignified Storytelling campaign reaffirmed our belief in ethical journalism. It motivates us to continue fostering meaningful stories that uplift, empower, and contribute to a more connected and compassionate society.
