Strategic alignment around a reader-centric model, development of a conversion path, and reader value growth are the three priorities for news media companies in the post-COVID era, according to the Google News Initiative (GNI) Subscriptions Lab. The European lab is a joint programme of Google, FT Strategies, the consulting arm of the Financial Times, and INMA. It aims to accelerate digital subscription initiatives of eight European publishers and share the best practices with the INMA membership. Working since April, the lab has just reached its midpoint. The discovery phase, of which the main findings we are now ready to share, has revealed a number of common challenges that news organisations face when transforming their business model.
