Elevate Scholarships launched for under-represented groups in media by INMA, Google News Initiative

DALLAS (3 September 2020) – A scholarship to accelerate educational opportunities for media professionals from under-represented groups worldwide was launched today by the International News Media Association (INMA) and the Google News Initiative (GNI).

The Elevate Scholarship programme is designed to strengthen the future of the news business by embracing and elevating historically under-represented and disadvantaged groups below the senior management at news media companies.

ws industry fundamentals as well as networking and mentoring opportunities.

Scholarship recipients will receive:

  • Recognition via public announcements. 
  • Free access to three upcoming INMA master classes. 
  • Participate in a mentoring video meet-up with Google and INMA to discuss news industry and career development.  
  • Receive a free membership in INMA for one year – with full access to the association’s global community. 

To qualify for an Elevate Scholarship, applicants must be employed by a news media company, hold a position below senior management, be in the news media business for less than 15 years, be under age 45, aspire to become a top manager at a media company, and be a part of an under-represented and disadvantaged group within your country.

The application is free, and deadline to apply is September 25, 2020.

“Removing obstacles for equitable inclusion in news industry training and development, which hamper innovation and the future of the news media, can shatter the glass ceiling for professionals from under-represented groups,” said Earl J. Wilkinson, executive director and CEO of INMA.

Chrissy Towle, head of news, Americas partnership solutions at Google, said that diversity and inclusion are integral for next-generation news media growth. She cited the need for novel ideas and innovation from a range of perspectives: ethnicities, genders, ages, sexual orientations, religions, disabilities, access to higher education, and more. Said Towle: “How can the news industry become more inclusive? How can you contribute to the news industry’s inclusiveness?”

The Google News Initiative (GNI) is a programme designed to help journalism thrive in the digital age. Working with news partners, the Google News Initiative build products to meet the news of news organisations and grow their digital businesses, collaborate with news companies to solve important business and industry-wide challenges, and develop and support programmes to drive innovation across the news industry.
