WASHINGTON, D.C. (3 June 2018) – Veteran Canadian news media executive Sandy MacLeod was presented the International News Media Association’s highest honour for volunteer service and career achievement tonight at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Presented since 1947, the INMA Silver Shovel Award recipient was selected by a committee of past recipients.
MacLeod’s media career has spanned nearly four decades, with special emphasis on print circulation with Thomson Newspapers, Southam Newspapers, and the Toronto Star. He recently left the Star after 16 years and is now general manager of Toronto-based HRAI (Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada).
Presenting the award at the opening reception of the 88th Annual INMA World Congress of News Media at the Newseum in Washington, Folha de S.Paulo Chief Commercial Officer Marcelo Benez cited MacLeod’s more than decade-long service as a volunteer with INMA including the North America Division Board and the International Board of Directors. MacLeod served as president of the North America Division Board in 2010-2012, helping structure division activities and creating events dedicated to audience development and advertising.
MacLeod has been a tireless advocate for INMA in Canadian media circles, has spoken at industry conferences on behalf of INMA on four continents, and has contributed articles and blogs that have been widely shared throughout the INMA network.
“One of the reasons INMA makes such a powerful difference in today’s news media industry is because of volunteers like Sandy,” said Benez, who received last year’s Silver Shovel Award. “Rampant volunteerism is INMA’s great differentiator among industry groups worldwide. INMA has nearly 100 news media executives serving on boards and committees, more than 50 regular blog contributors, and hundreds more who contribute articles, webinars, presentations, and more. All of this is what makes the ‘INMA conversation’ unique.”
