Overview of this campaign
Our colleague Deniz Yuecel has been under arrest in Turkey since March 1st, 2017 in Silivri prison near Istanbul and of all that time he spent 279 days in solitary confinement. It is infathomable to imagine being detained in a cell that small for so many months – all alone. This issue of DIE WELT wanted to reenact the impression of narrowness of Deniz Yuecels living space: an immediate experience exceeding the printed word and giving the newspaper a unique haptic dimension. The significance of freedom of the press through the feeling of the absence of freedom – that is how we wanted to remind people of Deniz Yuecel’s situation and the situation of over 100 other journalists being held in Turkey for political reasons.

Other media (from the public broadcaster ARD’s “Hessischer Rundfunk” to the ZDF’s “heute”-News edition) also reported about our special issue. We were able to make a mark for freedom of the press with these newspaper pages and depict the radical handling of the Turkish government in regard to critical media reporting. Many of our readers have sent us pictures of how they spread Deniz Yuecel’s cell on their living room floors and many also posted them in social media channels.
