Overview of this campaign

The New Arrivals is a series of feature articles EL PAÍS started in order to understand the migration phenomenon, a topic that is at the center of an intense political debate in Europe. The newspaper decided to follow during 500 days a group of soccer players from Alma de África, a team from Andalusia, in the South of Spain, mostly composed by African undocumented migrants.
The first chapter of the series, The odyssey of the new Europeans, is built around different journalistic formats and techniques in order to reach a wider audience. This special report has been published in the printed version of the newspaper (on the front page) and in the web section in a special format that includes a text, a documentary video, a photographic report and interactive illustrations and graphics that explain how the Spanish society and the migration policy changed in the last decades.
Soccer is used in this case as a hook to attract as many readers as possible, not only those who are sensitive to the migration topic. The soccer players are the guiding thread in the attempt to explain how the social and labor integration of migrants works in Spain, the bureaucratic obstacles the foreigners have to face to obtain their documentation, the dreams they had before arriving in Europe and the acceptance that reality is not as they expected.
Through the stories of the soccer players the series also broadens the view on how the Spanish and European migration policy evolved in the last years, becoming increasingly defensive especially from the start of the European migrant crisis in 2015.
