Apple’s upcoming app subscription plan change has sparked an outcry from news publishers worldwide — thwarting multi-media efforts based on customer knowledge. Many publishers built a complete business model for the iPad based on a commercial “agreement” that is now being revoked.

Apple is changing the rules.

On Thursday, February 17, INMA will convene a just-in-time invitation-only Roundtable on Tablet Subscriptions at the Park Inn Hotel at London Heathrow Airport to:

  • Analyse the new subscription plans.
  • Discuss ways to work with intermediaries like Apple.
  • Look into alternative subscription models.
  • Look at what the possibilities are with HTML5

Key discussions in this one-day Roundtable will revolve around sharing of subscription revenues, who holds the customer data, and how to build multi-media subscription plans with Apple and other intermediaries. How should publishers react?

Moderating this Roundtable will be Fréderic Filloux, whose Monday Note Web site and e-newsletter have been at the forefront of all Apple/news industry discussions and whose recent blog captures the angst of news publishers worldwide.

The Roundtable programme and discussions will be built on the knowledge gained from INMA's recent Tablet Summits held at Oxford University in the United Kingdom and Harvard University in the United States. INMA, together with Innovation, was the first industry organisation to explore the audience and revenue opportunities of apps and tablets.

This Roundtable event is inspired and organised by INMA and supported by other industry associations OPA Europe, FIPP, FAEP, ENPA and WAN-IFRA.

As befits the confidential nature of these discussions, a report of the INMA Roundtable will not be made public.
