The new video editing app by Instagram, Edits, is making content creation easier.

Since the app is still in its early development, Instagram is looking for regular feedback and ideas from content creators who have started using the tools. According to Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram and the Creators Instagram account, here are recent new features Instagram has released based on user feedback. These new tools can help journalists with their video editing.

A “reverse” tool

When you have a video clip in your timeline on the Edits app, you can now select that clip and tap on the “reverse” button which will rewind the movement in that clip. For example, if you have a subject walking into frame from left to right, this reverse tool will then have the subject walking into frame from right to left.

Teleprompter effect

The teleprompter effect is exactly what it sounds like: You add the text of what you want to say to the camera on your phone for the video. Then, while you are recording, the effect moves the text like a teleprompter. You can adjust the speed at a pace that you feel comfortable with and eliminate your workflow of recording a bunch of different clips to then splice together into one dialogue.

If you are regularly creating personality-driven social videos, this is going to be an effect you’ll want to use. This tool will be great for journalists who want to tell their stories on social media and not feel like they have to memorise a script or write down details from their articles to then share in their videos.

Storyboarding made easy

In the ideas tab of the Edits app, you can keep track of content ideas or write down what you want your next videos or stories to be about. Now, you can translate your bullet point lists into a storyboard, where you can add related videos to your talking points.

This will be a timesaver for reporters who want to create weekly videos turning their stories into explainers, because you can pre-plan all of your talking points in one area then add videos to those points and it will put that all into a timeline. This will save time of going through hours of content and picking out the most compelling visuals.
