Shikshak Samman event celebrates educators, teaches students about democracy

In a world where education shapes societies, acknowledging the tireless efforts of teachers is both a responsibility and a celebration.
Since 2023, Amar Ujala, one of India’s leading Hindi language news organisations, has taken this responsibility to heart through its Amar Ujala Shikshak Samman (teachers’ felicitation ceremony) initiative. This unique programme honours teachers while instilling democratic values among students.

Held at Amity University, Noida (a private university near New Delhi), the event has grown into a movement uniting educators, students, policymakers, and the wider community. On September 6 of this year, the auditorium once again echoed with applause as teachers from Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, cities in India’s national capital region, were celebrated by eminent guests for their contributions to education.
Dual impact: student engagement and teacher recognition
What makes Shikshak Samman unique is its dual impact.
The journey begins in classrooms, where students vote for their favourite teachers through a structured micro-site. This exercise gives more than 200,000 students a real-world voting experience, preparing them for their future civic roles. By engaging with the values of democracy, fairness, and responsibility, students gain lessons that go beyond textbooks.
At the heart of the programme lies the felicitation of selected teachers. Each year, educators are recognised for their dedication, innovation, and ability to transform lives. Whether through modern teaching methods, community engagement, or nurturing confidence among students, these teachers embody the spirit of education.
The event in numbers
From 2023-2025, more than 400 schools have registered for the programme; more than 200,000 students have voted; and more than 400 teachers have been felicitated.
Behind these numbers lies a powerful narrative: Students learn the importance of participation and voting, schools embrace a culture of recognition, and teachers find motivation to continue shaping the next generation with renewed zeal.
Voices of inspiration
The event is not just a ceremony but a platform for dialogue.
From Brajesh Pathak (deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and minister for medical education, medical and health, and family welfare departments) to well-known figures like Awadh Ojha (a popular Indian educator and motivational speaker) and Mahesh Sharma (member of Parliament from Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh), the keynote speakers highlighted the pivotal role of teachers in nation building.
Their words underscored a common truth: While policies and systems guide education, it is teachers who ignite the spark of curiosity and courage in children.
An emotion-filled celebration
Each year, the ceremony delivers memorable moments. Teachers dedicate awards to their students, families share the joy of recognition, and the collective pride of the education fraternity create an atmosphere charged with gratitude and hope.
It serves as a reminder that teaching is not merely a job, but rather a life-long calling to inspire and guide.

Looking ahead
As Shikshak Samman enters its fourth year, its cumulative impact is clear: It not only honours educators but also builds responsible future citizens. By celebrating teachers publicly, Amar Ujala reinforces the message that quality education is central to progress and those who deliver it deserve to be celebrated.
The journey of Shikshak Samman proves that recognition has the power to inspire. For every teacher who steps back into the classroom with a renewed sense of pride and every student who directly experiences the spirit of democracy, the ripple effects of this initiative continue to shape communities for years to come.
