INMA becomes launch partner for Google’s Digital News Initiative

INMA is a launch partner for the Digital News Initiative (DNI), designed to support high-quality journalism through technology and innovation in Europe. The Google initiative was announced Tuesday at the FT Media Conference in London.

Google will invest €175 million in the initiative over three years. The project’s goal is to enable ongoing collaboration and dialogue between the tech and news sectors, to promote innovation in digital journalism, and help support a sustainable news ecosystem.

The DNI will seek to extend its work to other European publishers and anyone involved in Europe’s digital news industry will be able to take part in any or all of its elements.

“Accelerating digital skill sets of managements and employees in the news industry ecosystem is crucial to the business transformation of news brands,” said Earl J. Wilkinson, executive director and CEO of INMA. “The International News Media Association (INMA) supports initiatives that upgrade the innovation quotient of media companies and believes DNI will help fast-track digital training and development.”

The DNI will focus on three key areas:

  • Product development: Google and news publishers will work in close collaboration to explore product developments to increase revenue, traffic, and audience for news publishers.
  • Supporting innovation: Google will create an innovation fund, to be disbursed over three years, to support and stimulate innovation in digital journalism.
  • Training and research: Google will invest in new training and development resources for journalists and newsrooms across Europe and fund research into the changing media landscape.
