Fifteen media companies from six countries have been selected for the 2021 Latin American Audience Analytics Accelerator by the Facebook Journalism Project and the International News Media Association (INMA), in conjunction with the International Center For Journalists (ICFJ).
The companies selected from 223 Latin American applicants are:
- Diário de Nordeste, Brazil
- Editora Globo, Brazil
- El Tiempo, Colombia
- El Universal, Mexico
- Gazeta do Povo, Brazil
- Grupo AM, Mexico
- Grupo El Comercio, Peru
- Grupo OPSA, Honduras
- Grupo Milenio, Mexico
- Grupo Reforma, Mexico
- Los Andes, Argentina
- Noticias Caracol, Colombia
- Página/12, Argentina
- SBT News, Brazil
- UOL (Universo Online), Brazil
The media companies will soon begin an eight-month, hands-on programme created by INMA Smart Data Initiative Lead Greg Piechota that includes training, benchmarking, coaching, mentoring, and projects. Each company will receive stipends of at least US$15,000 to executive Accelerator projects.
In November, Accelerator participants will report back key learnings in an INMA-hosted town hall designed to enhance understanding of how data can elevate business outcomes, understanding of engagement, and what to do with that knowledge.
“The large number of applications to Accelerator showed that news publishers of all sizes and geographies saw audience analytics as key in engaging people, growing reader revenue and advertising business,” Piechota said. “The jury was impressed by enthusiasm and willingness to learn and experiment of the applicants.
“In the end, we selected a cohort of publishers who had already started their audience analytics journey and were at a more or less similar level of maturity. That was crucial for us that the group could, at times, work together and share their experiences on a peer-to-peer basis,” Piechota explained. “We were also looking for candidates that had buy-in from the highest echelons of their companies. We were looking for candidates who expressed determination to learn and participate fully.”
Media companies selected for the Accelerator programme can expect to discover the role of data in digital transformation, align business strategy with data strategy, form a data-positive culture, better know readers and their journeys, learn how to register and log in readers, segment readers, predict behaviours, and run data-informed experiments.
