Sacramento Bee reaches important niche audiences through tablet apps

By

The rapid pace of innovation and consumer adoption of mobile devices is not likely to slow anytime soon.

These avenues continue to offer us new and flexible options for valuable audience segments to consume our content.

The audience connecting with us via mobile devices is:

  • Younger.

  • More affluent.

  • More educated.

And these segments are of keen interest to both our initiatives to build audience, as well as being of interest and value to advertisers who want to reach them.

Median income: Market adults accessing newspaper content via mobile devices are 40% to 80% more affluent than the market base.

Median age: Those accessing newspaper content via mobile devices are younger than the market base and younger than our print readers, whom have a median age of 50.

As the influence of mobile continues to grow, The Sacramento Bee established an iPad app last year, and we are now expanding our mobile portfolio to serve an important niche audience.

With the introduction of Capitol Alert Insider Edition, the Bee will continue to be the go-to source for covering the politics of the largest state in the union, a hallmark of our brand.

“The world moves quickly at the Capitol, and information is a valuable commodity,” said Amy Chance, the Bee’s senior editor for politics. “We’re looking to serve the people who follow California policy and politics most closely – giving them immediate and even early access to (the) news and opinion they need to do their jobs.”

Within the Insider Edition you’ll find comprehensive news produced by the Bee’s Capitol Bureau staff, along with many additional features:

  • Immediate notice on breaking news.

  • A curated Twitter feed of important Capitol insiders.

  • Instant updating of key bills to watch.

  • Early access to field poll stories.

  • Early look at Bee editorials and cartoons on state topics.

  • Live broadcasts of committee hearings and floor sessions from The California Channel.

  • Quick access to salaries of California’s 300,000-plus state workers.

  • A running feed of all state government news, editorials, and blog posts.

  • A directory with rundowns on each state lawmaker and immediate e-mail access to their key aides and schedulers.

A 15-day trial is available at sacbee.com/insider or look for it in the App Store. After the 15-day free trial, the Capitol Alert Insider Edition is available for just US$19.99 a month, or US$199 for an annual subscription.

The target audience is legislators, key staff members, state agency department heads, lobbyists, political bloggers, media, state and local party leaders, professors, researchers, state workers, and those interested in or affected by California politics, in or out of market.

The audience attracted by the Capitol Alert Insider Edition will be a highly engaged group and a future advertising opportunity.

There is more coming soon on building value from and for our digital audience.
