In times of uncertainty and increasing psychological challenges, the “Glücksimpulse” (“Happiness Impulses”) series by Vorarlberger Nachrichten (VN) offered a refreshing perspective.

Over 10 episodes, positive psychology expert Bertram Strolz and I explored key topics such as resilience, mental strength, relationships, and the impact of physical activity on well-being.

With a multimedia approach that included videos, VN print articles, digital content on vol.at, and podcasts, the series combined scientific insights with practical exercises, making mental health tools accessible to a broad audience and providing concrete recommendations for integrating well-being practices into daily life.

Expanding reach through multimedia formats

VN adopted an innovative multichannel strategy to reach the broadest possible audience. The content was published in the Vorarlberger Nachrichten, in video formats, as digital articles on vol.at, and as podcasts on Spotify and other major streaming platforms.

This diverse distribution allowed readers to engage with the series in their preferred way — whether by reading, watching, or listening. By offering content in multiple formats, VN ensured accessibility across different age groups and media consumption habits.

To deepen audience engagement, interactive exercises were integrated, encouraging readers to actively apply positive psychology techniques in their daily lives. Instead of passively consuming content, they were invited to participate in simple yet effective activities that made psychological concepts more relatable and actionable.

Through real-life examples and expert advice, the series demonstrated how small behavioural changes could positively impact well-being. This approach not only educated but also empowered audiences to take charge of their mental health.

A new standard for journalism

Beyond raising awareness, Happiness Impulses contributed to VN’s ongoing digital transformation. By strategically placing some content behind a paywall, VN strengthened its digital presence and positioned itself as a leader in multimedia storytelling.

The combination of free and premium content provided value to both casual readers and subscribers, reinforcing VN’s commitment to high-quality journalism.

The series resonated strongly with audiences, reaching 15,000 V+ subscribers and 35,000 print subscribers, while also generating 2,600 video views and 1,600 podcast streams. These figures highlight the growing demand for multimedia storytelling and VN’s ability to adapt to the evolving media landscape.

With “Glücksimpulse,” VN successfully bridged the gap between traditional journalism and digital storytelling. The project demonstrates that modern media can do more than just inform; it can inspire, empower, and contribute to public well-being.

By integrating expert knowledge with compelling storytelling and interactive formats, VN has set a new standard for how media can actively support mental health.
