For nearly a century, the Swiss magazine Beobachter has been a trusted guide, evolving from a respected publication into a dynamic support system for its members.

While known for its quality journalism investigating social, political, and economic issues, Beobachter strategically integrates this with comprehensive legal advice and dedicated social engagement, creating an ecosystem where the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

This synergistic approach, recently formalised as an “ecosystem play,” leverages nearly 100 years of trust to deliver modern solutions, most notably through the innovative use of AI in legal services.

The pillars of the ecosystem

Beobachter’s strength lies in the interplay between its core areas:

  1. Journalism: High-credibility, investigative reporting forms the foundation, building trust and informing the public.
  2. Legal advice: A unique offering in the Swiss media landscape, featuring around 30 in-house legal experts providing daily counsel via phone and e-mail. This is augmented by a network of over 100 lawyers for complex cases, digital tools like the legal advice self-service platform offering 24/7 access to legal know-how and specialised legal insurance products developed with Coop Rechtsschutz AG.
  3. Social engagement: Initiatives like the Prix Courage award and the SOS Beobachter Foundation actively promote social justice and support vulnerable populations, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to societal well-being.

These pillars don’t operate in isolation. Journalistic insights often fuel topics for legal guides or identify areas needing social action. Legal expertise enhances the depth and accuracy of reporting. Digital tools extend the reach of trusted advice, creating a continuous loop of information, support and engagement.

The game changer: AI legal advice chatbot

Launched in November 2024 after a successful beta phase, the Beobachter AI legal advice chatbot is a cornerstone of the modern ecosystem and a prime example of leveraging technology to enhance core services.

It directly addresses the limitations of standard AI tools like ChatGPT for legal queries, which often confuse laws, are prone to AI-hallucinations and lack source transparency, leading to low user trust (rated 4.6/10 in user tests).

The Beobachter chatbot overcomes these hurdles in the following ways:

  • Reliability: It accesses only Beobachter-verified content — a database of nearly 6,000 expert-checked items — preventing law confusion (e.g. between Swiss, German, and Austrian law) and ensuring trustworthy answers.
  • Transparency: Sources are clearly indicated, boosting user confidence significantly (trust jumps to 9.3/10 when reliability and sources are known).
  • Quality control: Both input data and output answers undergo checks and optimisation.
  • Accessibility: It provides reliable, understandable, anonymous, and multilingual legal advice 24/7, complementing the human experts available during business hours.

The results speak for themselves. Even in its beta phase without significant marketing, the chatbot saw nearly 800,000 active sessions and over 12,000 engaged sessions since mid-November 2024, which is impressive, given the limitations of the German-speaking Swiss market.

Crucially, user satisfaction is exceptionally high, with over 90% rating it four or five stars (average 4.6/5), validating its role as a valuable, low-threshold entry point to legal support. It also serves internally, helping experts draft or check answers, enhancing efficiency.

Ecosystem expansion

The ecosystem thrives through digital transformation (marked in 2024 by a full Web site relaunch, a new app with over 25,000 downloads, and the Swiss Justice Barometer survey, among many other initiatives) and strategic B2B partnerships.

The chatbot, for instance, isn’t just for subscribers; it’s offered as a white-label solution for partners, such as associations and insurance companies, extending Beobachter’s trusted advice into new channels. Digitalising legal insurance add-ons with Coop Rechtsschutz further integrates services and revenue streams.

Outlook for 2025

Building on this foundation, 2025 focuses on enhancing service value, as outlined in the road map.

Key plans include vigorously promoting the chatbot, developing curated content and service offers around key phases of people’s lives, optimising the digital journey for new users, and fostering closer community interaction via enhanced commenting features. The lawyer network will also be highlighted as a key part of the comprehensive support offered.

By seamlessly blending its legacy of trust with cutting-edge AI and a holistic view of user needs, Beobachter has transformed a traditional magazine into a powerful, modern ecosystem poised for continued growth and impact.
