How content aggregators can help news publishers focus on value

Content aggregators can be both helpful and harmful to the news media business model, most in the industry believe. Damon XI, head of UCWeb India and Indonesia and the Alibaba Mobile Business Group, spoke about this topic at INMA’s South Asia News Media Conference in New Delhi.

“We are here really to work together with the publishers to build up the content ecosystem together so we can help them to focus more on their core value,” he said. “We can maximise their value by helping them reach out to their target users.”

When asked what the ideal relationship should be between newspapers and content aggregators, Damon XI said: “We are close with each of the publishers. From the country level, almost all the top publishers are close strategic partners.”

Moving forward, UCWeb plans to introduce a new feature that will help publishers have their content specially curated. This would allow the news followers to subscribe to the media account, so they can check up-to-date information.

“This is something we are working closely with a few selected high-profile publishers,” he said.
