Earlier this year, Diário de Notícias out of Portugal made the decision to close down its print weekday newspaper, keeping only the Saturday edition of print.
“That was based on an economical decision,” said Catarina Carvalho, editor-in-chief at the company. “It was budget-wise. It was because the company thought that we were very low in audiences, and they wanted to experiment to focus on completely digital.”
Speaking at the INMA Media Subscriptions Week, Carvalho added that Diário de Notícias is also focusing on starting paywall during this time. “So that we could focus on more digital work instead of the newspaper, which you know kind of changes the culture of the newsroom.”
