In December 2023, INMA and Google News Initiative (GNI) awarded their fourth annual Elevate Scholarship to 50 news media professionals from 31 countries. This series features these impressive media professionals who are shaping our industry.
Since beginning her career in the broadcast industry over a decade ago, Nagorik Television’s Nabila Marzuk Shanta has produced a diverse array of shows in Bangladesh, including children’s programmes, women’s shows, business entertainment, documentaries, and infotainment series.
As the youngest female producer in the country to have worked on such a wide variety of productions, she stands out not only for blazing a trail but for ensuring that everything she produces is uplifting and inspiring.
“Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to producing content that not only entertains but also uplifts and empowers women,” she said. “One of my notable achievements in this realm was the creation and production of a groundbreaking television series that focused on highlighting inspiring women from diverse backgrounds. This show received widespread acclaim and played a pivotal role in showcasing the achievements and struggles of women in our society.”
In addition to her focus on empowering women, Nabila has excelled in producing business-related content, creating numerous television programmes that highlight successful entrepreneurs, their journeys, and the challenges they face.
“These programmes have not only contributed to the growth of the business community but have also inspired aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams fearlessly.”
Nabila has become well-connected with major celebrities and influencers in Bangladesh, and this has helped many of her content pieces have gone viral, shining a light on unsung heroes in society and helping them gain the recognition they deserve.
Nabila has also gained recognition, winning the European Documentary Award for Best Pitching Project for a documentary on the hip-hop community and the 2023-24 Women in Conflict 1325 Fellowship Programme from the United Kingdom.
As an Elevate Scholarship recipient, Nabila said she is eager to build upon her existing skills and innovate within the news media landscape: “This scholarship presents a valuable opportunity to gain deeper insights into areas crucial to newsroom success, such as subscriptions, product development, data analysis, advertising, and the broader business strategies of news organisations.”
“I am committed to using this knowledge to contribute to the sustainability and growth of the media industry, ensuring that journalistic integrity is upheld while meeting the financial imperatives of the sector.”
