In December 2023, INMA and Google News Initiative (GNI) awarded their fourth annual Elevate Scholarship to 50 news media professionals from 31 countries. This series features these impressive media professionals who are shaping our industry.

Mahbub Rashid began his decade-long career in journalism with an ambitious move: He became one of the founding members of Nagorik Television, a government-approved satellite TV station in Bangladesh.

As a planning executive, he played a crucial role in the channel’s launch, including overseeing content planning, scriptwriting, and post-production review. Mahbub also spearheaded the development of several television shows with an eye toward ensuring their quality and impact.

His contributions became even more evident when Mahbub transitioned to the news department, eventually becoming the deputy news editor. At the same time, he took on oversight of Nagorik’s digital platforms and, under his direction, those platforms have achieved greater profitability and visibility. Now he serves as the station’s additional news editor.

“My role at Nagorik Television intersects with critical areas of the news media business,” Mahbub said, citing such duties as content development, digital platform management, advertising integration, and strategic decision-making. “These contributions collectively enhance the quality of our news products, engage our audience, and drive the overall success and growth of our organisation.”

Now, he looks forward to expanding his skillset even further and applying what he learns to the continued success and expansion of Nagorik Television, delving into areas such as subscription strategies, product development, data analytics, and advertising strategies.

Understanding so many key areas of operation will allow him to be effective in each one and advance what the organisation has already accomplished, enriching the company’s offerings while giving it an even stronger foothold in the industry.

“I recognise the significance of acquiring specific business skills to stay relevant and contribute effectively to our organisation’s growth and sustainability,” Mahbub said. 

“A holistic business perspective will ensure that our editorial objectives align seamlessly with broader organisational goals, fostering sustainable growth and adaptability in an ever-evolving industry.”
