On October 28, INMA and Google News Initiative (GNI) awarded their Elevate Scholarship to 50 news media professionals around the world. This series features these impressive media professionals who are shaping our industry.
Whether he is in a classroom or a newsroom, Deyi Li is passionate about teaching. It’s part of his overall life plan to make a difference. After graduating in 2013, he began teaching English and Chinese while at the same time embarking on his journalism career.
As a business journalist at the China Business Herald (a national economic Chinese newspaper) he began honing his writing and interviewing skills, working diligently to acquire the skills he needed to progress in his career.
His work began winning awards and he moved on to Huanqiu.com, the Chinese Global Times Web site, where he spent more than three years as a journalist and senior editor. Since the organisation was bilingual, it opened several doors for him and broadened his world view.
“It gave me chances to talk with people at high levels from China and other countries, as well as allowed me to take a closer look at the dynamic world,” Li said. It also gave him the opportunity to write a weekly column and manage the company’s live streaming events, which landed him dozens of corporate awards and led him to China Global Television Network (CGTN), where today he is an editor.
Moving forward, he wants to take what he has learned and teach others: “I want to have influential articles and multimedia products using cutting-edge technology and the latest methodologies. I hope to be a change-maker and an inclusive person who will make contributions to society and this era — and to make the world a better place.”
