Overview of this campaign

Our objective was to solve a critical friction point in the user journey: fragmentation. Users reported needing to "search and sift" across platforms to find relevant content, yet they explicitly rejected traditional personalization solutions. Our research spanning NPS data, competitive analysis, and 1:1 interviews uncovered a deep skepticism of algorithmic "news bubbles." Users wanted to "sweep away" irrelevant noise but feared losing editorial breadth.

Therefore, our primary goal was not just to increase engagement, but to engineer trust.

We defined three strategic pillars based on these insights:

  1. Transparency: The experience had to be a "glass box," not a black box. Users needed to understand why they were seeing content.

  2. Immediacy: The product had to solve the "cold start" problem. We aimed to deliver value immediately through implicit signals, ensuring no user faced an empty state, while making customization optional and additive.

  3. Cohesion: Rather than a standalone feature, For You needed to integrate into the app’s core information hierarchy.

To execute this, we utilized the RICE framework to prioritize impact and confidence. We identified that a top-level tab launch would maximize reach, but only if we could validate the solution quickly. We adopted an agile delivery model, partnering closely with engineering to reuse existing components for lower-priority flows. This allowed us to focus our resources entirely on the core user problem: building a scalable, modular architecture that balanced user agency with Bloomberg’s editorial authority.

Results for this campaign

The launch of For You succeeded in turning a skeptical audience into engaged users, validating that transparency is the key to modern personalization.

Quantitative Impact:

The product delivered an immediate, measurable impact on consumption depth. Post-launch A/B testing revealed a +1.17% (±0.88%) lift in overall screen views. In a mature media environment, this lift signifies that For You is effectively acting as a recirculation engine, helping users discover more content without increasing their effort or friction.

Qualitative & Product Evolution:

The true success lies in how user data reshaped the final product. Early concepts featured a traditional "article-by-article" feed. However, testing showed users found this overwhelming. We pivoted to a modular layout, which improved scannability and gave users the "control" they requested. Furthermore, we elevated "Topics" from an optional feature to the lead module, directly answering the user's desire for explicit customization.

Strategic Gains:

We achieved our goal of efficiency without sacrificing quality. By leveraging existing components for secondary flows, we launched a clean V1 quickly, allowing us to iterate based on real behavioral data.

Ultimately, For You proved that the "news bubble" can be broken. We successfully created a personalized experience that respects user intelligence. By prioritizing "Topics" and transparency, we established a scalable foundation for future growth one where personalization is driven by user trust and editorial integrity rather than opaque algorithms. The product has transformed discovery from a passive, suspicious experience into an active, valuable utility.
