Overview of this campaign

Almost 22 million weapons were sold in the US in 2021. The investigations aims to show on the one hand that the trail of the United States' arms business leads more clearly than previously known to Europe. To Germany. To Austria. For example, the gun manufacturer SIG Sauer from Münsterland sold over 1 million pistols in 2022, plus 60,000 rifles. The profits will be invested in the further expansion of its weapons production. On the other hand, it is clear that the corporations, with their sometimes massive donations to the NRA and other gun lobby groups, also contribute to the fact that US gun legislation is so liberal and permissive. We decided to divide the long-term research into seven chapters, but to connect the chapters with data-based scrollytelling. This allowed us to create a common narrative framework with a special visual element.

Together with ZDF Magazin Royale, the Tagesspiegel Innovation Lab analysed documents, verified photos and videos, collected data, interviewed experts and insiders and interviewed survivors of US massacres. The research shows: The trail of business with the United States' weapons mania leads more clearly than previously known to Europe. To Germany. To Austria.
