Overview of this campaign

TAB’s objective was to drive active engagement with betting by inserting itself into the moments sports fans are most engaged. At risk of becoming just wallpaper, success depended not on volume of messaging but on relevance, timing and trust. 

The strategic insight was clear: sports fans are most receptive to betting when odds directly reflect the game they’re following, before it starts, as it unfolds and as the conversation continues afterwards. Traditional betting advertising typically appears outside these moments, limiting engagement and impact. 

NZME’s response was to design a contextual ecosystem that owned the entire sporting journey: 

Pregame – Build anticipation 

TAB odds were dynamically embedded into relevant NZ Herald sports articles ahead of matches, allowing fans to explore upcoming fixtures, markets and narratives in a trusted editorial environment. 

In Game- Capture peak emotion 

During live play, AI-powered odds refreshed in near real time within NZH live match articles, while the ACC brought TAB into the heart of the action through Game Day Hunch. ACC hosts placed a $100 TAB Bonus Bet on bold hunches and tracked the odds live on air – creating shared tension as fans rode the game together. 

Post game- Extend the conversation 

Once the final whistle blew, TAB remained present through ACC podcasts (Mad Monday, BYC, The Agenda) and the dedicated TAB Sportsbook podcast. These environments recapped wins and losses, debated moments that mattered and looked ahead to upcoming fixtures, keeping betting engagement alive beyond the match itself. 

The campaigns also required technical innovation at scale- operating within the strict API limits, managing traffic surges during major sporting moments, supporting different refresh cadences and maintaining editorial integrity across hundreds of articles. 

The primary objectives were to: 

  • Drive engagement with TAB betting through contextually relevant formats 

  • Owing pre-game, in-game and postgame moments across digital and audio 

  • Prove that premium contextual advertising outperforms traditional digital formats 

  • Deliver measurable engagement without disrupting the fan experience  


Results for this campaign

The TAB Live Odds campaign delivered outstanding performance, validating the strategy of owning the sporting moment from anticipation through to analysis. 

Engagement Performance (All results are benchmarked against NZME’s standard average display CTR of 0.2%).  

Delivering 10 million impressions, we achieved the below highlights:  

  • Overall click-through rate: 3.35x higher  

  • Articles matched to specific events: 5.10x higher 

  • Live event articles: 6.05x higher 

Driving 51,000 people to the client’s website. 

Peak Event Impact  

Engagement surged during live sporting moments, lifting 17.70x above baseline and peaking at 40.70x higher during the Sonny Bill Williams vs Paull Gallen fight, highlighting the power of real-time contextual relevance.  

ACC Reach and Impact 

The ACC components significantly extended scale and engagement, with the combined activity delivering an average monthly reach of 312,078 across live commentary, podcast and social platforms. By transforming betting into live entertainment and ongoing conversation, TAB remained embedded in fan culture well beyond match time. 

Commercial Outcomes 

Beyond engagement, performance translated into tangible business impact for TAB: 

  • Event-based articles delivered the highest CTRs across all TAB’s digital channels, outperforming other performance media by more than 5x 

  • Cost per click was the lowest across TAB’s digital media mix 

  • Cost per engaged unique user was the lowest of all TAB channels, proving efficiency alongside scale 

By owning pre-game anticipation, in-game emotion and post-game conversation through premium contextual formats, this campaign demonstrated how NZME can deliver creativity, executional excellence and measurable impact, transforming digital betting advertising from interruption to participation.
