Overview of this campaign

HBL launching the mobile service Recommend a Refugee – A small step for a greater good

Background:
About a year ago over 35 000 refugees had arrived in Finland, hoping for a second chance to live and work in peace. But unfortunately most people did not care about the refugees, nor did the mass media.

Creative idea:
Instead of being yet another bystander of the crisis, Helsinki’s second biggest newspaper HBL went from reporting to reacting: it took action to make a difference.

The solution:
The fastest way to integrate foreigners is through work. So together with Finnish Red Cross (SPR), HBL developed and launched an easy-to-use mobile service which connected employers with refugees looking for work. With this action HBL managed to make Finns and foreigners useful to each other and became part of the national discourse.

What we accomplished:
Helsinki’s second biggest newspaper HBL went from reporting to reacting: it took action to make a difference. In the middle of the biggest refugee crisis, HBL developed and launched an easy-to-use mobile service which connected employers with refugees looking for work.

Together with Finnish Red Cross and big Finnish employers, HBL managed to make Finns and foreigners useful to each other and became part of the national discourse.

We went from writing about phenomenons to actually make a difference while introducing an easy to use mobile service platform to integrate refugees into work life in Finland. We started and contributed to an open dialogue about the topic and encouraged other companies to join the process.
