Marcelo Benez, a Folha de S.Paulo executive who helped build bridges between Brazil and the media industry worldwide, was honoured tonight in New York for career service and contributions to INMA. 

Benez was presented the Silver Shovel Award, INMA’s highest individual honour, at the concluding dinner of the 87th-Annual INMA World Congress of News Media at the Harvard Club of New York City. More than 300 people attended.

As chief commercial officer of Brazil’s Folha de S. Paulo, Benez has spent a career in news media, rising through the ranks in marketing, research, and advertising.

As a volunteer for INMA, Benez has served on the association’s global Board of Directors in stints as president of the INMA Latin America and Brazil divisions. He has represented the association at industry conferences worldwide, discussing best practices at Folha de S. Paulo and the creative Brazilian media. He has helped build INMA membership and awareness in Brazil during the past decade. 

“He is described by friends as a risk-taker whose determined streak pushes him to new limits — hard to believe in someone also said to be the ‘nicest person in INMA,’ “ said Grzegorz Piechota, a Polish media executive who presented the award to Benez at the New York dinner. “He uniquely touches people with his kindness, humility, warmth, and his manners … so Brazilian.” 

The Silver Shovel Award is INMA’s highest individual honour for career achievement and rewards contributions to INMA and the news media industry. INMA prides itself as a volunteer-first association and encourages members to stay involved with association activities.
