Three big challenges remain ahead of a company discussing the issue of native apps vs. Web app, according to Peter Soetens, manager/digital development at Corelio:
First, what about user and brand experience?
Second, how will you handle regional editions at a reasonable expense?
And third, how will you be available on all platforms?
To begin with, publishers should concentrate on tabletising newspaper impact through criteria, Soetens told delegates at the INMA European Conference on Thursday.
Don’t let users forget about the good old “newspaper feel,” he said, based on almost ancient values and sentiments. Help them through your content with easy navigation and readability. Launch a hybrid app and make it special by adding a value to it, based on a paywall.
If your newspaper contains many pictures, enhance the great brand, he added. Also, remember easy navigation. News content can be indigestive – don’t make it more difficult by a complex editing and layout.
Use slide shows for your pages and set an editorial peace at the first page for the “old feel.” The good thing about tablets and pictures: you get the opportunity of communicating more pictures of even better quality.
While thinking of your pictures, don’t forget about content. A picture says more than a thousand words, but in adding short articles on the right, you fully use advantage.
