First-Place Winners Selected in 2004 INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards Competition

Order Best In Print, featuring the top print award recipients in this year's competition

The 69th INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards, honouring excellence in newspaper marketing worldwide, were presented Monday, May 17, before more than 400 delegates to the INMA World Congress of Newspaper Marketing at The Plaza Hotel in New York.

In 2004, the INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards generated more than 1,100 entries from 180 newspapers from 34 different countries around the world. The judging took place in Baltimore on February 18-19 where a team of top advertising, newspaper, and marketing professionals judged the competition. The judges selected first and second prizes for each of the categories in four circulation roups in 17 categories, from four circulation groups -- under 50,000, 50,000-125,000, 125,000-300,000, and over 300,000.

The Top 3 awards went to:

  • The New York Times for "Best of Show" in an in-newspaper advertising promotion titled "Sponsored Delivery Program Series." (Pictured with INMA President Eivind Thomsen of Schibsted in Norway -- top left -- are Jeff Honea, executive creative director; copy; Fran Straus, executive director, marketing services; Amy Heit, executive director, marketing services; and Bart Solenthaler, senior art director.)

  • El Independiente for "Best of Copywriting" in a radio promotion titled "Campaña Institucional."

  • The International Herald Tribune for "Best of Graphic Design" in an in-newspaper advertising promotion titled "IHT Well-Rounded Ad Campaign."

Several newspapers won more than one award, led by The New Zealand Herald with four awards, The State from South Carolina, USA, with three awards, and several newspapers with two awards each.

The New York Times' "Best of Show" puts the U.S. newspaper among elite company. Recent recipients of this coveted honour include Dagens Nyheter in Sweden, Berliner Zeitung in Germany, Cape Times in South Africa, The Australian in Australia, The New Zealand Herald, and Göteborgs-Posten in Sweden.

Judging annually is based on concept, creativity, copy/graphic design, production, and overall effectiveness, as well as results. Entries are judged in comparison to other entries.

The chairman of the 2004 awards competition was Marti Buscaglia, president and publisher of the Duluth News-Tribune in the United States, and a member of the INMA Board of Directors.

Awards were announced at the New York INMA conference, and presented to recipients by INMA President Eivind Thomsen of Schibsted in Oslo, Norway.

First-place recipients received a statuette, and runners-up received a certificate of merit. Print award recipients are featured in the 2004 edition of Best In Print, a coffee table-style book.
