First-Place Winners Selected in 2003 INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards Competition

The 68th INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards, honouring excellence in newspaper marketing worldwide, were presented Thursday,
April 24, at the INMA World Congress of Newspaper Marketing in Vancouver.
In 2003, the INMA Newspaper Marketing Awards generated nearly 1,200 entries from 170 newspapers from 30 different countries
around the world. The judging took place in Minneapolis on February 10 where a team of top-notch advertising, newspaper,
and marketing professionals judged the competition. The judges selected first prizes and certificates of merit for each of
the categories in four circulation groups in 17 categories, from four circulation categories.
The Top 3 awards went to:
- Göteborgs-Posten for "Best of Show" in a multi-media campaign titled "Two Sides To A Story."
- Süddeutsche Zeitung for "Best of Copywriting" in an outdoor/point-of-purchase/display entry titled
"The Short Story Sequel."
- Cape Argus for "Best of Graphic Design" in a public relations and events campaign titled
"Gun Run Print - Lycra, Couch Potato, Skimpy Outfits."
Several newspapers won more than one award, led by South Africa's Cape Argus with six awards, Brasil's A Crítica and Sweden's
Göteborgs-Posten with four awards each, and The Gold Coast Bulletin and The Sydney Morning Herald, both of Australia with three
awards each.
The Göteborgs-Posten's "Best of Show" puts the Swedish newspaper among elite company. Recent recipients of this coveted honour
include Verdens Gang in Norway, The New York Times in the United States, Dagens Nyheter in Sweden, Berliner Zeitung in Germany,
Cape Times in South Africa, The Australian in Australia, and the New Zealand Herald.
Judging annually is based on concept, creativity, copy/graphic design, production, and overall effectiveness, as well as results.
Entries are judged in comparison to other entries.
The chairman of the 2003 awards competition was Marti Buscaglia, president and publisher of the Duluth News-Tribune in the United
States, and a member of the INMA Board of Directors.
Awards were presented in Vancouver by INMA President Sergio Rego Monteiro of Jornal Do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro.
First-place recipients received a statuette, and runners-up received a certificate of merit. Print award recipients are featured in the 2003 edition
of Best In Print, a coffee table-style book.
