First-Place Winners Selected in 2002 INMA/E&P Newspaper Marketing Awards Competition

Celebrating The New Zealand Herald's "Best of Show" and five first-place awards are, from left, INMA President Sergio Rego Monteiro; Pip Elliott, marketing manager of The New Zealand; and Editor & Publisher's William J. Callahan Jr. Below, representatives of The Toronto Star collect their "Best In Copywriting" award, including, from left (top), INMA's Sergio Rego Monteiro; Lorne Silver, the Star's promotions and creative director; Victor Kruklis, vice-president marketing and planning; Brad Henderson, director of communications and operational planning; E&P's William J. Callahan Jr.; and from left (bottom), Judy Sims, manager of business development; and Alison Simpson, president of Enterprise Creative Selling.

The New Zealand Herald was presented the "Best of Show" honour and five first-place awards in one of the strongest showings ever in the nearly seven-decade history of the INMA/E&P Newspaper Marketing Awards, announced May 2 at the INMA World Congress in Toronto. Seventy (70) awards were presented during the conference announcement, from 164 finalists announced in March.

In 2002, the INMA/E&P Awards generated nearly 1,100 entries from 176 newspapers from 28 different countries around the world.

Judging for the competition was held February 5 in Dallas by 24 top executives with area media companies, product marketers, and advertising agencies. Spread over 11,000 square feet of space in a North Dallas office complex, more than 1,100 entries from 200 newspapers in 30 countries were judged in a day-long process. The judges selected first place recipients and runners-up for each of the categories in four circulation groups in 17 categories, from under 50,000 to over 300,000.

The New Zealand Herald's "Best of Show" honour was presented for a multi-media campaign brand campaign whose objective was to communicate and reinforce The Herald should be an essential part of people's lives, to strengthen its position as a leader, to increase its "like-ability" and the brand affinity readers felt with the newspaper, and maintain The Herald brand as top-of-mind. Judges said the following: "No other entry presented the inherent value of newspapers in such a compelling, creative way. The print was extraordinarily tasteful and graphically beautiful. Well done all around!"

Recent recipients of the awards competition's "Best of Show" have been leading newspapers such as Verdens Gang in Norway, Dagens Nyheter in Sweden, The New York Times in the United States, Berliner Zeitung in Germany, The Australian, and last year the Cape Times in South Africa.

Winners of the INMA/E&P Award Competition's other top awards were:

  • The Toronto Star for "Best of Copywriting" in a television commercial titled "I Woke Up In a New Place."

  • Houston Chronicle for "Best of Graphic Design" in an in-newspaper readership promotion titled "Quote Campaign."

Two other newspapers won three INMA/E&P Awards: The Daily Camera in Boulder, Colorado, USA, and Waikato Times in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Judging annually is based on concept, creativity, copy/graphic design, production, and overall effectiveness, as well as results. Entries are judged in comparison to other entries.

Dennis Skulsky, president and publisher of the Pacific Newspaper Group in Vancouver, a member of the INMA Board of Directors, and emcee of the Toronto awards presentation said of the entries: "I can tell you that newspapers are fighting hard to push relevance, push brand, and push sales in the most challenging of economic times."

Awards were presented in Toronto by INMA President Sergio Rego Monteiro of Jornal Do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro.

First-place recipients received a statuette, and runners-up received a certificate of merit. Print award recipients are featured in the 2002 edition of Best In Print, a coffee table-style book.
