2000 INMA/E&P Award Recipients

The 65th INMA/E&P Awards, honouring excellence in newspaper marketing worldwide, were presented 25 May 2000 at the INMA World Congress of Newspaper Marketing in New Orleans.

In 2000, the INMA/E&P Awards generated 1,501 entries from 209 newspapers from 27 different countries around the world. The judging took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where the Vancouver Sun put together a team of top-notch advertising, newspaper, and marketing professionals to judge the competition. The judges selected first and second prizes for each of the categories in four circulation groups in 17 categories, from under 50,000 to over 300,000.

The Top 3 awards went to:

  • Best of Show: The Australian, Surry Hills, New South Wales, Australia. (Photograph: From left, William F. Gloede, editor of Editor & Publisher (E&P); Frits Lahnstein, president of INMA; and Michael Miller, marketing director of News Ltd., Australia.)
  • Excellence in Graphic Design: Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
  • Excellence in Copywriting: Cape Times, Cape Town, South Africa.

Several newspapers won more than one award, led by the Cape Argus in Cape Town, South Africa, with five; the Cape Times in Cape Town, South Africa, and the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colorado, USA, with four each.

Judging annually is based on concept, creativity, copy/graphic design, production, and overall effectiveness, as well as results. Entries are judged in comparison to other entries.

Contest Committee Chairman Michael Kilgore, who is marketing communications director for the Tampa Tribune, was impressed with this year's entries. "There was some very good work at the small newsppaers," Kilgore said. "The size of the newspaper and the marketing budget obviously didn't prove to be a hindrance to many enterprising and imaginative entrants."

The international flair to the competition pushed the creative edge in 2000, Kilgore said. "Those marketing and promotion pieces pushed the boundaries and had a distinct edge to them," he said. "Whether that translates to successful marketing is something those companies would have to answer, but the entries certainly made for entertaining and provocative viewing."

INMA Executive Director Earl J. Wilkinson noticed an evolution from product marketing to brand marketing. "We saw many newspapers switching from product to brand marketing," Wilkinson said. "We're no longer just motivating sales for the moment but making the ground fertile for sales efforts down the road.

"There is so much competition for the eyeballs of consumers," he added. "Clearly the level of marketing in the past hasn't worked. Ads today have to elicit an emotional response. They need to shock you. Wake you up. Newspapers are starting to recognise that their ads have to stand out and say, 'Look at me!' "
